How much Auto Insurance do I Need?

California only requires liability coverage to be 15/30/5. These limits were set more than 30 years ago when prices of everything were many times cheaper! Therefore, having car insurance at the State minimum is often too low to actually cover the damage sustained in auto accidents. The medical bills for ambulance & just one day in the emergency room can easily... exceed $30,000!

My advice is to get at least 50/100/25 liability limits for someone who doesn't have assets or high income.

If you own a house or a condo, consider getting at least 100/300/100.

If you own more assets and have a family, you should get 250/500/100 & also obtain 1-million-dollar personal umbrella policy. This umbrella policy covers liability (and sometimes underinsured motorist) losses results from car accidents or from your homes & possibly rental properties.

You will be amazed to find that the difference between the lowest & the high coverage of 250/500/100 is only around $20 - $25 a month in many cases (for good drivers). For a 1-million-dollar Personal Umbrella policy, it only costs around $20 - $30 a month (for the majority of us)!

That is called smart spending.
